CAN I SEE A CHIROPRACTOR IF I HAVE OSTEOPOROSIS?

Although having osteoporosis is not normal, it is the most common bone disease to affect humans and as such we often get questioned whether people can still get adjusted or whether chiropractic care can help. The short answer, yes!

In order to understand osteoporosis, we need to understand that the bones become less dense, and when they are less dense, your bones aren’t as strong as they used to be and they are more easily fractured. In fact, normal daily activities can become a risk for people and even minor events and falls can be enough to cause a fracture. For our article on chiropractic and falls prevention - click here.

Many people seek chiropractic care for correction of spinal issues and to improve their overall health and wellbeing. Typically, chiropractic ‘adjustments’ are made to the spine at an area where the joint is not moving or functioning normally, also known as a subluxation. This is done to restore normal joint motion, improve spinal biomechanics as well as impact the function of the central nervous system. Chiropractors use quick and light forces to deliver an adjustment and although adjustments are extremely safe, it is important to determine the condition of a person’s spine prior to any form of care.

A thorough chiropractor will take a detailed clinical history and perform a comprehensive spinal and neurological examination first (plus they may even take x-rays) to determine what your core issues are, so that they can give you the very best advice and care possible.

When it comes to your care, there are many different and gentle ways to adjust the spine. Some techniques may involve a handheld device called an ‘activator’, and others such as Sacro-Occipital technique focus on tension within your spinal cord and involves barely any force at all. It’s important that you discuss with your chiropractor your preferences and concerns, as well as your health history so that they can use the technique that is right for you. Chiropractors are highly skilled to modify adjustments for every individual, and whatever technique is provided it is always done to help your body work better.

Here’s what we know. It’s impossible to separate the structure and function of your spine from the structure and function of your nervous system. What that means is that if there are joints in your spine that aren’t moving in the way they should (subluxations) this will interfere with the function of your nervous system and can result in compromised function of your body. The chiropractic adjustment addresses this relationship between the spine and nervous system to restore your function.

More and more people are experiencing the benefits of chiropractic care as a safe, natural and drug-free option. When was your last spine and nervous system check up? Call us at Thrive Chiropractic Co to arrange a visit.
