How do I know if I need a chiropractor? (Or physio, or other?!)"If you're slightly (or fully!) confused about whether you should be seeing a physio/chiro/massage therapist - we get it. There is a lot of information out there, so how do you know which option is best to deal with your problem? PHYSIOTHERAPY: If you've had a recent injury such as torn a ligament in your knee or injury to an extremity (arm or leg), a well-trained, hands on physiotherapist may be your best point of call. Physiotherapists are often called upon to help rehabilitation of joints and muscles, and regain mobility after an injury. We have a bunch of excellent physios that we work with, if you would like a recommendation, please send us an email. MASSAGE THERAPY: There are many different types of massage, but a fully qualified registered massage therapist may be a great solution to assist with tight or sore muscles, or purely for some 'you time' or relaxation! Again, we have some great massage therapists we regularly refer to so if we can help with a recommendation please get in touch. CHIROPRACTIC: Chiropractic is the 3rd largest health profession in the world (after Medicine and Dentistry), and doctors of chiropractic deal with the central nervous system and its' relationship with the spine. Chiropractors specifically and scientifically examine the spine for any misalignments which can interfere with the trillions of messages that are sent every second between your brain and your body (via your nervous system). The chiropractic premise is quite simple; your body knows exactly what to do and how to heal when there is no interference to your nervous system. Often we find that working with a combination of, or even all professionals above may be what you need on your individual journey back to health. This is why we closely work with some great professionals in the area.

Is my problem just muscular? Or nerve related? This can be a tricky question for you to answer on your own, because simply going off how you feel may not tell you the full story. For example, its possible that where you feel pain may not even be where the problem is. We look at your body holisitically to determine where your core problem stems from, and we use specialised technology to help us determine if it is a spine/nerve issue, or a muscular issue.

How much does the initial visit cost? Our initial chiropractic functional analysis is $120 and will take approximately 30-minutes to complete from start to finish. Upon completion, the chiropractors will use their clinical judgement to decide on whether or not you need to be sent for x-rays. If you have a medicare card x-rays will be bulk billed. If it is safe to get you adjusted without further imaging you'll get your first chiropractic adjustment with us. We will then organise a follow up visit to discuss your options and begin your customised care plan.

Will I get an adjustment at my first visit?A common question we get is whether you'll be adjusted at your first visit. If you are transferring from another chiropractor within 6 months (and you have your clinical notes/xrays), then YES. If you've never seen a chiropractor, or it has been over 6 months - let's check you out first. Just think, you wouldnt want a surgeon operating on you without a consultation first! If it's safe for us to do so you will be getting adjusted at your first visit. Here's what we'll DO at your first visit: Your initial consultation is about 45 minutes, where we will review your health history and discuss any specific concerns you may have. Then your chiropractor will complete a series of tests and checks including postural examination, range of motion assessment, neuro-muscular examination, spinal examination and scans to measure the function of your central nervous system. Sometimes further imaging or x-rays are needed of your spine to move forward with your care, if so a referral will be given at this visit. Your first adjustment will take place at your second visit, where we go through all of your findings and discuss how we can help. If necessary, we may even be able to see you the same day for this visit. We get incredible results in our practice and we like to think that's partly because we are very thorough in our initial examination process. We're looking forward to helping you!

What is an 'adjustment'?A chiropractic adjustment is a specific and scientific skill used by chiropractors to assist with joints that are fixated, locked up or have lost their proper motion. Your spine and pelvis consists of 33 bones and over 70 joints, all of which through injuries, postural factors etc have the potential to misalign in a number of different directions. Your chiropractor has trained for many years to determine the exact position of these vertebra and joints, and furthermore to know exactly when, where and how to deliver an adjustment (and importantly, when not to).

Are adjustments safe? Do they hurt?Chiropractic adjustments are 'remarkably safe' according the New Zealand Government's Inquiry, and chiropractic has an excellent safety record. (1) Adjustmetns are a conservative approach to health that avoid invasive procedures or addictive drugs. In relation to the treatment of neck and back pain, studies have shown that a course of chiropractic care was 250 times safer than a course of anti-inflammatory drugs. (2) DOES AN ADJUSTMENT HURT? In most cases, not at all. In fact most people find having an adjustment very relaxing. With some adjustments you may sometimes feel or hear a popping sound from the spinal joints. This is simply caused by a gas release from the joint as spinal movement is restored, such as when a wet glass is removed from a table. Some Chiropractors use a hand held instrument to adjust the spine. Others use pelvic blocks to re-align the body. Special techniques are used for adjusting infants and children. Whatever the technique, Chiropractors use skill, not force or strength, to conduct a safe, effective adjustment. 1. Chiropractic in New Zealand: Report of the Commission of Inquiry. (1979). Do you look after babies and children?Yes absolutely! We recommend that children be checked from birth. All births whether long or short, natural, assisted or cesarean can put a lot of pressure on your baby’s spinal cord and nervous system. Even the baby’s position in the womb can have an early effect on spinal alignment. When these tiny infants begin to grow, learn to crawl, and eventually walk, freshly developed motor patterns often lead to numerous slips/falls, bumps, and bruises. Chiropractic adjustments are crucial to helping keep kids in alignment through these fast changing years.

I've heard once you see a chiropractor you have to keep going, is that true?"Our care should only be utilized for as long as it is serving you to become a better, healthier, and more vibrant you. Typically, patients do choose to stay with us for general well-being care because they like the way they feel and function following a chiropractic adjustment. We understand that maintaining an interference free nervous system with optimal communication and connection is essential for health throughout a lifetime.
